Zenon

I met Nicos Zenonos quite recently. I was curious to find out why a 67-year-old man decides to set up a winery at a time when his co-evals have retired or are about to shake off all work responsibilities. "What did you do before you decided to set up as a winemaker?" I asked him. "I have been tending vineyards all my life. It's the only thing I know," he replied.

He went on to express his indignation at the fact that for whole decades the large wine industries paid him knock-down prices for the grapes he produced on his 11 hectares of vineyards and at times he had to wait for hours at their winery gates until they were in a position to receive the product of his labours. It was for this reason, and with the support of his son Zenon and his daughter Yiannoula, that he made the great stride, taking the courageous decision to set up a winery in his village Omodos. His son, from whom the winery got its name, had studied Marketing and his daughter Law. Nicos's ambition is to pioneer in catering for demanding wine-lovers. The winery is situated beside a wide bend on the main road from Omodos to Platres and to the well-known wine village of Kilani. It has a large parking area and a spaceous reception hall where one can taste, in comfort, not only the wines but also the zivania produced and bottled there. As time goes on, the demands on winemakers are becoming more and more relentless, let alone the question of competition – both internal and international. The message must be driven home that commercial success does not depend on passion and romanticism alone. The management of Zenon winery are aware of this and they are determined to succeed.

Best Wine

Mavroyiannos 2007

This is a very interesting red wine – a blend of the imported Shiraz variety and the local Maratheftiko. Good density red colour, medium intensity attractive nose of red fruit and flower aromas with traces of herbs, and mouth of very good body, satisfactory fruitiness, discernible tannins and good balance. It is the winery's best wine.

Recommended Wines

Vasileia 2006

This is the winery's Cabernet Sauvignon wine. It features good chromatic density, prominent nose of mature and complex aromas, mainly caramel, vanilla, sweet spices and mint; the mature fruitiness continues to dominate the mouth, though the wine is still quite astringent. Its acidity is discernible but not offensive.

Zenon white dry

The winery's Xynisteri is a light yellow wine with rather simplestructured, mediumintensity aromas reminiscent of peach, pineapple and mango. It has a light taste, with good acidity and an aftertaste of medium length and intensity. It is a simple wine for everyday use and must be drunk within the first ten months of its life.

Mataro-Grenache

The blend of these two varieties has been a success everywhere and every time, and Cyprus could not have been an exception. This wine, when young (1-2 years), constitutes a good choice for everyday meals. Satisfactory colour, fruity nose with herbal undertones, good body, acceptable tannins and balanced acidity.
