Lambouri

Although the winery is now under the management of the new owner, Mr Rolland Wig, it still bears the name of its founder who continues to produce all its wines. After 36 years’ employment with the Cyprus Electricity Authority, Christakis Lambouris returned to his village, Kato Platres, replanted all his old vineyards with imported multidynamic vine varieties and started producing wine in bulk. Having attended for three years the oenology classes organized by the government Department of Viticulture and Oenology, he felt confident enough to build his own little local winery at Kato Platres, which, in its first two years of existence, produced only red wine.

Today, the Lilliputian Lambouri winery has transformed itself into a huge three-storey complex covering an area of over 1200 square metres, where no fewer than a dozen different wines of all types are produced. The latest addition to the winery's range was a set of three organic wines – white, rosι and red, all vinified from organically produced grapes and certified by the German firm Lacon. Add to these, two sweet wines (a Muscat of Alexandria and a Grenache) as well as the Commandaria Legacy (see relevant chapter). This significant investment is due to the new proprietor’s faith in the local ecosystem’s huge potential to produce good wine. The Lambouri winery has acquired the exclusive rights of producing kosher wine on the island. This is a well-known wine produced according to Hebrew practices and under the supervision of a rabbi who visits the island regularly to ensure correct procedures at all stages of production. This wine is intended for use by Jews living in Cyprus and is also exported to the US. The Israeli market is also beginning to show some interest.

Best Wine

Syrah 2006

Deep red, still young colour. Concentrated nose, intensely reminiscent of New World wines, dominated by plum, blackberry, spices and mint aromas within a discernible but well-placed oak context. Satisfactory body in the mouth, good quality tannins and balanced acidity. An interesting wine for medium-term consumption.

Recommended Wines

Cabernet-Merlot 2005

A very good wine that immediately betrays its xerothermic origin – like all wines made from these two grape varieties: a nose dominated by green pepper, caper and dry grass aromas, accompanied by red fruits and balanced barrel. It features a fuller mouth than the winery's Syrah, but is also more tannic and has higher acidity.

Ya'in Kafrisin

Made from the foreign Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon, and the local Mavro varieties, Ya'in Kafrisin features a medium intensity red colour, simple-structured red fruit and grass aromas, satisfactory body, discernible tannins and highlighted acidity. The history of this wine is interesting; you can read it on the back label.
