Linos

Erodotos Erodotou, a former member of ΚΥΠ (the Cyprus equivalent to the CIA) conforms to the rule that most winemakers in Cyprus are people from professional areas irrelevant to wine, who abandon their jobs for the sake of wine's charms. It is true, however, that it was Erodotos's wife who, in 1986, had insisted on their making their own wine. This materialized the following year and then Mrs Erodotou had the inspiration of setting up their own winery in Omodos, Mr Erodotou's birthplace. For three successive years Mr Erodotou refused to involve himself in such a venture but his wife, with inexhaustible persistence, continued producing wine on her own every year, and with the encouragement of the Department of Viticulture and Oenology (of the Ministry of Agriculture) – who had words of praise for Mrs Erodotou's wines – her dream eventually took shape and form as the Linos Winery. (Linos is the Greek word for a wine press). Mr Erodotou now talks about improving the quality of the wines he produces, based on the experience he has had so far. He is not interested in increasing the quantity, he says, and explains that he is concentrating on varieties that are more dynamic and better suited to the Cyprus terrain, such as Mataro and Maratheftiko, and on improving his blends.

His latest concern is to introduce bioculture on his 25 hectares of vineyards, with the approval of one of the recognized international organizations that issue the relevant certificates. At the winery one can also buy the very tasty soutzioukos made by Mrs Erodotou herself. This is a traditional Cyprus sweet made from grape juice and almonds or walnuts. It is both tasty and addictive and is good accompaniment to a glass of Commandaria or a shot of zivania. It is available in half-a-kilo airtight packages.

Best Wine

Linos rosé

The winery's rosé (from Grenache and local Mavro), when young (10-12 months), is a pleasant, light wine suitable for everyday use to accompany traditional Cyprus cuisine dishes. Rose colour, with pleasant, simple-structured aromas reminiscent of cherry and caramel, and light, refreshing taste, good acidity and satisfactory aftertaste.

Linos red

The foreign Mataro and Grenache varieties, blended with the local Mavro, give a simple wine for everyday use. When young (1-2 years), it features a medium density red colour, simple-structured aromas with satisfactory fruit, and a light taste with somewhat intense tannins and medium length aftertaste.

Linos white

The winemaker blends the foreign Riesling variety with the local Xynisteri to make this simple white wine for short-term consumption. When young (10-12 months), it satisfies the demands of the wine-lover who wants a low-priced wine for his everyday meals.
