Erimoudes

Ultimately, passion for wine knows no limits, and certainly no age limits. The story of this small winery at Kilani bears witness to this truth. When a former building contractor who spent 30 successive years of his life in an admittedly difficult job has, at the age of 61, the stamina and pluck to set up even a small winery, is this not passion and enthusiasm? Costas Erimoudes is the standard good-looking, well-meaning countryman who, on retirement in 1995, got his pension from the Construction Industry Provident Fund and at the same time bought two 300-litre stainless steel fermentation tanks in which he produced his first 200 bottles of wine which he offered to his friends.

The experiment was successful and led to the next venture, but this time the wine was not made from Mavro grapes but from his own vineyard which he had planted in 1992 with the cosmopolitan variety of Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, the production has risen to 21000 bottles. His white wine was given the name of his daughter, "Athina", and his reds, "Miltiades", "Nikolina" and "Constantino", carry the names of his grandchildren.

Best Wine

Shiraz 2007

This first Shiraz that the winery has put on the market is really very good. It has a young dark colour, and a nose that surprises us with its rare (by Cypriot standards) fruitiness – cherries and berries – and its flowery aromas (mainly violet) supplemented by vanilla undertones. In the mouth it has good body, it is extraordinarily smooth and round and displays lively acidity and an aftertaste of good duration. The best red wine produced by the winery so far.

Athina

I tasted the winery's Xynisteri one year after harvesting and I cannot but comment on the fruitiness and freshness that it still retains. Light yellow in colour, it exudes lively aromas of citrus fruits, green apple and peach. The freshness and fruitiness are present in the mouth too, together with a good array of aromas and an equally good aftertaste.

Erimoudes's rosé wine is as fresh and lively as his Xynisteri. Visually, it will captivate you with its beautiful colour. The nose retains the charm with its attractive aromas, mainly rose, strawberry and cherry. The wine has a comparatively simple mouth but features good balance, satisfactory aroma and medium duration aftertaste.

Constantino

The 2004 vintage turned out to be a plain wine with harsh tannins and excessive acidity. The 2005 vintage was an improvement, with more fruit and pleasanter aromas but still with highlighted acidity. The 2006 vintage has a fuller mouth though the acidity is still on the high side.
