The best Commandarias in the market

Finishing this trilogy of reports on Commandaria, I considered necessary to taste and present the best wines of this category. Apart from the wines of the four wine industries, I taste and valuate for the first time two Commandarias of smaller producers, who decided to invest in this magnificent wine in the last years. Without wasting any more time, I present you the best, in my opinion, Commandaria wines in the market:

Centurion, ETKO

The aged Commandaria of ETKO is one of the best I have ever tasted. It is a refined and mature version of a mythical wine with subtle and multidimensional aromas as well as a rich, mature and magnificent taste that leaves no one unmoved. Keep it for another 30-40 years in your cellar as a flavour investment or as a legacy to your children!

Score: 92/100

Price: €25

Legacy 2000, Lambouri

The first Commandaria the winery Lambouri has put in the market has nothing to be jealous of the ones of traditional wine makers. It is rich and clear in the nose with the typical dominant aromas. In the mouth, it makes an impression with its flavorful body, strength, its excellent balance and its long aftertaste. An excellent wine from every aspect.

Score: 90/100

Price: €15

St John, KEO

Dark chestnut-brown colour. Rich nose with intense and complex nature dominated by aromas of raisin, must syrup, dried figs and nuts, dark chocolate, and cigar. Thick and fatty in the mouth with an amazing flavour balance due to its strong acidity, a wine with a long, aromatic aftertaste. A great wine at an almost ridiculous price.

Score: 90/100

Price: €10

St Nicholas 2000, ETKO

Chestnut colour with gold shades at the edges. Intense and complex sense nose. Rich aromas starting with dried figs, coffee, must, kernel of walnuts, carob-bean honey and extended to dried apricots and sweet spices. Thick and rich taste with very good balance and long, persevering aftertaste.

Score: 88/100

Price:  €10

Commandaria, Kyperounda winery

I tasted the Commandaria of Kyperounda Winery from the 225 litres oak barrels in which the wine has been maturing for around three years now. Even though the barrels were already 3-4 years old, when they poured in the Commandaria from Ayios Mamas, the aroma of oak in the wine was intense. I expect that bottle ageing will facilitate the absorption of oak flavour, which will greatly improve the wine. The taste of this Commandaria impressed me not only with its body and strength, but also with its exceptional balance. I believe that with patience it will excel!

Score: 88/100

Price: €15

Saint Barnabas, SODAP

Rather light chestnut colour that is evident in not so old wines. Strong aromas with a simple though composition, with hazelnut and must together with some heavier flavours to predominate. Thick and fatty taste with good acidity that balances the rich sugars of the wine. Long and strong aftertaste.

Score: 84/100

Price: €10
