Nelion The name of this small winery at the village of Pretori is an abbreviated combination of the owners’ names, Neophytos and Eleni Ioannou. Neophytos is an authentic specimen of a straightforward, unaffected villager, unbelievably hardworking and cultured, who, for years, has been striving hard to make a living from the Cypriot countryside which has long been forgotten and abandoned by the spineless state. He talks about his devotion and love for his village, he opens his heart to you and his innermost soul reveals his passion for wine and his vision for a modern viable winery, at the helm of which, in a few years, will be his son who is studying Oenology abroad. At the same time, he cannot hide the disappointment of a vine-grower who, abandoned both by the state and by his fellow men, alone against the forces of nature and the lack of opportunities and means, and in the face of relentless and intensifying international competition in the wine market, is striving to stand his ground for a better future, away from the din and hubbub of the city with wretched tenements full of thousands of tenants deprived of the means of making a decent living.
The winery at Pretori is small but it is a neat, attractive and wellintegrated building facing and almost touching the road, with a tidy cellar, teeming with thousands of bottles beautifully laid out, in addition to a number of 300-litre oak barrels. The range of its wines does not reflect the winery’s small size, for it displays no fewer than ten different labels – which perhaps is too many and splits up the winemaker’s attention to quality.
